How to attract birds into the garden!!!?

hi i have a huge tree at the back of my garden beside my pond and i have been throwing seed into the gr hoping to attract goldfinches greenfinches blue **** robins etc but only magpies and will come down , i have thrown canary seed, sunflower seed ,safflolwer seed and peanuts? what do i have to do? thanks
