Anyplace to get used working laptop computer for my son?

Hello, I have an eleven year old son, his school says he needs to be able to klnow how to use a computer and to work on it at home for schoolwork. I am using a friends computer to send this. I am wondering, does anyone know of an organization or somewhere that people like college students ect, give away their old working laptops? Someone gave us one from craigslist and my son was so surprised and excited, me as well, and it did not work. Took it to the techs and they said it was basically no good and a goner, So still trying to find one, mostly will be used for surfing the web, schoolwork, nothing fancy, in time I would like to learn how to take and send pictures to family far away, but really need one for him to use for school ect. Thank you so much, we appreciate any advice. I asked local christian college and they said they did not have any advice for me as it is a prestigious college and alot of wealthy children go there, so thought when they got a new one, maybe they would donate their old one, no such luck.Thank you.
