Does a higher education free a person from social evils such as racism , phobia or ism?

Growing up in the Southeastern USA in the sixties and seventies I was witness to a lot of the prejuduce of the era. In particular the presence of the Ku Klux Klan of which realy was the domain of the higher educated and not the ignorant. To me it showed that such evils are a spiritual issue and not neccarily of education. A higher education helps to erradicate prejuduces but does not neccarily do the heart.
