Why is eugenics a bad thing?

I understand the underlying social implications of selectively breeding humans could lead to some pretty nasty stuff. However, scientifically, it seems like it would be a good thing to improve the human gene pool if possible. I don't know how it could be done in a socially responsible way, but this would seem to be the easiest way to overcome genetic diseases.
